Bringing Children to Practice Sustainability
The most impactful initiatives are often the ones that last the longest. With that thought, I came up with an idea: what if I spent the summer working with children?
Summer vacations are a time when children look for ways to stay engaged, learn new things, explore their curiosity, and, of course, avoid getting bored. To cater to this challenge, I organized an eight-week summer camp designed to make sustainability meaningful, interactive, and fun.
Over the course of the camp, children aged 7 to 12 explored themes such as the environment, sustainability, nutrition, equality, pollution, renewable energy, biodiversity, marine life, community campaigns, and much more. Drawing inspiration from the Sustainable Development Goals, each week focused on a different theme and was supported by activities, games, discussions, creative projects, and small initiatives that children could work on themselves.
The highlight of every session was the discussion circle, strategically placed at the beginning of the day. Rather than simply teaching children information, the goal was to create a space where they could share what they already knew, express what they were curious about, ask questions, and learn from one another. Children were encouraged to think critically, reflect on their experiences, and work together to find answers to the questions they raised themselves.
Throughout the eight weeks, the camp became much more than a place to learn facts about sustainability. It became a space where children developed observation skills, empathy, curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of their relationship with the world around them. By connecting big global challenges to their everyday lives, they discovered that positive change is not something reserved for adults, it is something they can actively contribute to as well.
This summer camp was an experiment in making sustainability accessible, practical, and engaging for children. More importantly, it was a reminder that when children are given the opportunity to explore, question, and participate, they often become some of the most thoughtful and enthusiastic changemakers in their communities.
Looking for meaningful ways to help children engage with sustainability? We'd love to explore it with you.
